Jewish Leadership Council’s statement following developments in the Middle East

Today, the people of Israel, including our friends and family, spent the Sabbath in and out of their shelters once again. Our thoughts are with them along with those across the region under Iranian attack.

Iran’s threat to the region is being demonstrated today. In addition to its use of ballistic missiles and drones to attack civilians, it remains a major state sponsor of terrorism. As the Prime Minister reiterated earlier, Iran has actively plotted to endanger the lives of Jews and dissidents here in the UK. Thousands of Iranians have also been murdered by their own government following protests. Efforts to contain the regime’s conventional weapon’s threat, it’s support for terrorism and it’s ambitions for a nuclear weapon, will make the world a safer place.

As this conflict continues, we understand that there will be British Jews stranded in the region as well as Israelis currently in the UK unable to return home. We will be working with the government and partners to ensure appropriate support is available in the coming days.
